Baseball's been a part of my life since I was 4 or 5 years old, though it wasn't until very recently that I had photographed a game. To be fair, I did attend one Northeastern game last spring, though I mostly went to play around with a new lens I had gotten for one of my film cameras. That being said, my love for baseball has never faded despite stopping playing in high school, though my relationship with America's favorite passtime seems to have evolved as of late.
About two weeks ago, I ended up at a Yankees vs Red Sox game with my 70-200mm. Thanks to some sub-par weather, my standing room tickets gave way to sitting five rows back from the third base dugout. In all honesty, it took about 30 minutes of shooting to realize exactly what I'd been missing out on.
I've been to five baseball games this weekend, both at Fenway and Northeastern's field out in Brookline, and have had the pleasure of playing around with a 400mm f5.6 at three of them. I can't quite tell if it's the punchy red of the uniforms, the hazy glow of afternoon light spilling out between the upper deck and the grandstands, or the tired shade of green of Fenway itself, but there's something incredibly addictive about shooting Red Sox games.
It didn't quite fit into my schedule this year due to already having a full time job, but I'm very aware of their Photo Intern position and will be gunning for it next season. Until then, I'll be bringing my gear into Fenway whenever I can, and searching for publications to shoot games for during this season.
For now, here are some highlights from the past weekend's exploration of baseball photography - check out my Sports portfolio for my shots of the Yankees-Red Sox game.
